Part of our guide: AI Calling in India: The Complete 2026 Guide
Key takeaways
- AI handles narrow, repeatable calls well: routing, reminders, confirmations, first calls to new leads and early EMI reminders.
- Behind the scenes, after-call notes and quality checks on every call can save as much time as AI-handled calls.
- Complaints, negotiation, hardship and sensitive calls still need trained people.
- Language is the real test in India: Census 2011 counted 121 languages, and Hindi was the mother tongue of 43.63% of people.
- Start with one task, measure it against today's numbers for a few weeks, then pick the next.
AI in call center work in India has moved past the demo stage. In 2026 it answers and routes calls, places first calls and reminders, writes the notes agents used to type, and reads every recording for problems. It still struggles with angry customers, real negotiation and anything sensitive. This guide goes through nine contact-centre tasks one by one: what AI does well today, where it breaks, and what your people should keep. We build AI voice agents for Indian businesses, so we also say plainly which of these tasks we do and which we don't.
What does AI in a call centre actually do in 2026?
It does three kinds of work. It talks to customers on narrow, well-defined calls. It helps human agents during and after their calls. And it reviews recorded calls at a scale no QA team can match. What it does not do well is the open-ended part of the job: calming someone down, bending a rule sensibly, or noticing that a customer is in real trouble.
So the useful question is not "Can AI replace our agents?" but "Which of our daily tasks is repeatable enough to hand over?" The sections below go task by task. Every example is hypothetical, with made-up businesses.
Which customer calls can AI handle on its own?
AI can handle calls where the goal is clear, the facts are fixed and the possible outcomes fit on a short list: route this caller, confirm this slot, remind about this payment. The further a call drifts from that, the sooner it should reach a person.
Call routing and conversational IVR. Instead of "press 1 for billing", the caller says what they need in their own words, and the agent sends them to the right queue. A conversational IVR works well for single-reason calls. Say a broadband provider in Jaipur gets a caller who says, "Subah se net nahi chal raha." The agent asks for the registered mobile number and the area, then passes the call to technical support with both noted. It struggles when a caller has three problems at once, is shouting, or is on a weak line in a moving auto. Always keep a "talk to a person" route that works on the first ask. Our comparison of AI calling, IVR and robocalls covers where a plain keypad menu is still the better choice.
Outbound first calls, reminders and confirmations. This is where AI pays back fastest, because volumes are high and each call is short. Say a coaching institute in Pune calls every new enquiry within minutes, asks three questions and books a counselling slot. A diagnostics lab in Lucknow confirms tomorrow's home sample collection the evening before. What AI does badly here: persuading a reluctant buyer, handling a long tail of unusual questions, or calling people who never asked to hear from you. How this work splits with your existing team is covered in AI calling vs telecallers.
Collections reminders. Early-stage reminders work well: "Your EMI of ₹3,450 is due on the 5th. Shall I send the payment link on WhatsApp?" Say an NBFC in Indore reminds two-wheeler borrowers three days before the due date, in Hindi, and records whether each customer has paid, promises to pay, or wants to speak to someone. Where it stops: a borrower who has lost a job, disputes the amount, asks for a restructure or is upset. Those calls need a trained person with authority to agree something, and lenders have RBI conduct rules to follow on every call. Our guide to compliant EMI collection calls covers those rules.
Where does AI help human agents during and after a call?
Some of the most useful AI work isn't on the call at all. It is the typing, form-filling and searching that agents do around each call, with a person checking the output.
After-call summaries and CRM notes. A summary can be drafted from the transcript: who called, what they wanted, what was agreed, the next step. Say a developer's sales desk in Gurugram gets "Wants a 3BHK under ₹1.2 crore, prefers Sector 79, site visit Saturday 11 am, spouse will join" in the CRM moments after the call ends. On calls our AI agents handle, every call is recorded and transcribed, with an outcome and a scored summary. Summaries go wrong on poor audio, people talking over each other, and spoken numbers: "pachees" misheard as "pachaas" turns ₹25 lakh into ₹50 lakh. Have people spot-check any summary that contains money, dates or promises.
Agent assist: live suggestions and knowledge lookup. Here the AI listens to a human agent's call and suggests an answer, a policy line or the next step. Say an insurer's helpdesk in Chennai gets a question about the grace period for a missed premium, and the agent's screen shows the matching paragraph from the approved policy notes. The best-known evidence comes from an NBER study of 5,179 customer support agents at one company: access to an AI assistant raised issues resolved per hour by 14% on average, including 34% for novice and low-skilled workers, with minimal impact on the most experienced. Assist tools help new joiners most. They fail when the knowledge base is out of date, so the tool confidently suggests last year's policy, or when suggestions pop up so often that agents stop reading them. To be clear, we don't sell agent-assist tools for human agents. On calls our AI agents handle, a manager can listen live, whisper or take over.

Can AI check quality on every call?
Yes. AI can review every recorded call and flag the ones that need a human ear, which most QA teams cannot do by hand. What it cannot yet do fairly on its own is decide whether an agent handled a difficult customer well.
Quality audits on 100% of calls. Manual QA usually means a supervisor listening to a small sample of each agent's calls. With transcripts and automatic scoring, every call can be checked against a short list: did the agent introduce themselves, confirm identity before discussing an account, avoid promising what the business does not offer, and agree a next step? Say a home-loan DSA in Ahmedabad finds that a few agents keep quoting a "guaranteed" interest rate. Better caught that day than at month-end. Use scores to choose which calls a person listens to, not to rank agents on a number alone. Scoring misses tone, sarcasm and context; a call marked down for "no closing" may simply be a customer who hung up. Our call audit checklist lists what to check.
Speech analytics. Once calls are transcribed, you can count what customers talk about. Say an online furniture brand in Bengaluru sees mentions of the delivery date double in a fortnight, mostly from Hyderabad orders. That points at a courier or warehouse problem before the complaint numbers show it. Analytics tells you what is being said, not why. Hinglish also makes simple keyword counts unreliable: "refund", "paisa wapas" and "return karna hai" can all mean the same thing, so group themes by meaning, not exact words.
How well does contact centre AI handle Hindi, Hinglish and regional languages?
Well for Hindi, English and Hinglish on clear lines, reasonably well in the major regional languages, and less reliably with strong dialects, heavy code-mixing, noisy lines and spoken numbers. Test it before any rollout.
India's spread is wide. The Census of India 2011 language tables counted 121 languages, 22 of them scheduled, and found that 96.71% of people had a scheduled language as their mother tongue. Hindi was the largest at 43.63%. So a Hindi-first agent serves a lot of callers, but not most of them.
Say a home-services company in Hyderabad takes bookings in Telugu, Hindi and English. What works: opening in the language the caller is most likely to use, switching when the caller speaks a full sentence in another one, and keeping turns short. What needs care: addresses, landmarks and amounts, which the agent should read back to confirm. Our agents work in Hindi, English, Hinglish, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali; for any other language, keep people on the line. Our guide to multilingual AI calling goes deeper on switching rules.
Can AI plan shifts and staffing?
Partly. Software has forecast call volumes from past data for years. Rosters, leave and agent wellbeing still need a team leader's judgement.
Say a travel company's contact centre in Kolkata expects a surge before Durga Puja. A forecast from last year's call logs gives a starting headcount by hour; the team lead adjusts for a new campaign, two agents on leave and a tired night shift. Forecasts break when something new happens, such as an outage or a price change. We don't build planning tools. One thing to plan for: once routine reminders move to AI, the human queue gets smaller but harder.
Task by task: what AI does today and what still needs people
Here is the whole map on one page.
| Task | What AI does well today | People are still needed for |
|---|---|---|
| Call routing and conversational IVR | Understands the reason in the caller's words, collects details, routes | Multi-issue or angry callers, a quick route to a person |
| Outbound first calls | Calls every new lead within minutes, asks a few questions, books a slot | Persuasion, unusual questions, the sale itself |
| Reminders and confirmations | Short, high-volume calls with fixed outcomes | Reschedules with conditions, complaints raised on the call |
| Collections reminders | Polite due-date reminders and payment links | Hardship, disputes, restructuring, settlements |
| After-call summaries and CRM notes | Drafts notes and outcomes from the transcript | Spot-checks on money, dates and promises |
| Agent assist | Suggests answers and policy text during a live call | Deciding what to say; keeping the knowledge base current |
| Quality audits | Checks every call against a short list, flags risk | Coaching and fair judgement on tone and context |
| Speech analytics | Counts themes and trends across all calls | Finding causes and fixing them |
| Multilingual handling | Hindi, English, Hinglish and major regional languages | Strong dialects, unsupported languages, bad lines |
| Workforce planning | Forecasts volume from past data | Rosters, leave, wellbeing, surprises |
What makes Indian contact centres different?
Three things: scale, regulation and the language mix covered above. India has a large outsourced customer-contact industry, and commercial calls are tightly regulated.
On scale, NASSCOM's Strategic Review 2026 executive summary projects direct tech-sector employment at about 6 million in FY26, with 135,000 net additions, and BPM exports growing 7%. NASSCOM put BPM revenue at about $59 billion for FY26, up from $55 billion, as reported by PTI. Its definition of customer interaction and support covers "all forms of IT-enabled customer contact; inbound or outbound, voice or non-voice". These headline figures do not separate voice contact-centre jobs from other BPM and IT work, so read them as the size of the wider industry. The same review describes BPM providers that have "embedded analytics, agentic AI and industry context into workflows", so large outsourced operations are already well down this road.
On regulation, TRAI's rules on commercial and automated calls changed again in September 2026. Rather than repeat them here, our explainer on TRAI's 2026 anti-spam rules for automated calls covers what they mean for AI calls. That is general information, not legal advice; check your set-up with your telecom provider and adviser.
How should you start with AI in your call centre?
Pick one task, write down how it runs today, hand it to AI for a few weeks and compare. Keep complaints, negotiation and sensitive calls with people from day one.
- Choose one narrow task. High volume, short calls, a few clear outcomes: reminders, confirmations, first calls to new enquiries or routing.
- Record today's baseline. Calls per day, how many connect, the outcomes, cost per call, and how long agents spend on notes.
- Agree the handover rules. The AI passes the call on, or books a call-back, when the customer asks for a person, complains, wants to negotiate, raises something sensitive such as a medical result or a fraud report, or asks something outside its facts. It sends a one-line reason, such as "Disputes late fee on October EMI, upset", so nobody repeats themselves.
- Test with your own staff. Every language you will use, wrong answers, interruptions, a caller who says "mujhe kisi insaan se baat karni hai".
- Run for two to four weeks. Listen to a set of calls every week, not only the dashboard.
- Compare and decide. Keep it, change the script, or drop it and try the next task.
On cost, a short reminder or confirmation call runs roughly ₹3–8 on our plans and a two-minute conversation roughly ₹12–16, plus 18% GST, with a one-time setup from ₹25,000. Unanswered calls are not billed.
Track your human team's numbers alongside the AI's. Once routine calls move, the calls left for people are the harder ones, so judge them on resolution and complaints, not calls per hour.
Getting started without the hype
AI in Indian call centres is useful today for a clear set of jobs: routing, reminders, confirmations, first calls, early collections, notes and checking every call. It is not ready to replace the people who handle complaints, negotiate, or sit with a customer through a hard moment.
If you want to see one task running on your own script, in your customers' languages, start with our AI voice agent. Book a 20-minute demo and we'll walk through which of your calls are worth handing over first.
Frequently asked questions
What can AI do in a call center today?
It can route inbound calls by what the caller says, place short outbound calls such as reminders, confirmations and first calls to new leads, draft after-call notes, and check every recorded call against a quality checklist. It is weaker at complaints, negotiation and sensitive conversations, which still need trained people.
Can AI audit 100% of call centre calls?
Yes, it can transcribe and score every recorded call against a checklist and flag the ones that need a closer look. It should not be the final judge of an agent's performance, because automatic scores miss tone and context. Use the scores to decide which calls a supervisor listens to.
Which contact centre task should we automate first?
Start with a task that is high in volume, short, and has a few clear outcomes, such as appointment reminders, slot confirmations or first calls to new enquiries. Write down how it runs today, run the AI version for a few weeks, and compare. Leave complex and sensitive calls until you have results.
Does AI in a call centre need a big IT project?
Not usually for front-line calls like reminders, confirmations and first calls. Our agents connect to Google Sheets, Facebook and Instagram lead ads, CRMs or webhooks, and write outcomes back where your team already works. Agent-assist tools that sit inside your existing contact-centre software are a bigger job and depend on that software.
What should the AI pass to a human agent on a transfer?
The caller's name, the reason for the call in one line, anything already collected such as an account number or order ID, and why the AI is handing over. That way the customer does not have to repeat themselves, and the person picking up knows why the call has reached them.
