Part of our guide: AI Calling in India: The Complete 2026 Guide

Key takeaways

  • Published data puts telecaller pay at roughly ₹1–3.5 lakh a year, with city averages around ₹17,000–27,000 a month for telemarketers.
  • Per minute of actual talk, a well-used telecaller can cost less than AI at ₹6–8 plus GST.
  • AI wins on speed to first call, after-hours cover, lead bursts, languages and complete records, and you pay nothing for unanswered calls.
  • People still win on negotiation, complaints, sensitive calls and closing.
  • The best setup for most teams is hybrid: AI makes the first call, people handle what it qualifies.

The AI calling vs telecaller question usually starts with cost and ends with something else: speed, coverage and who should handle which call. We run AI calls for Indian businesses every day, and our honest view is that AI is not always cheaper per minute than a well-used telecaller. It wins elsewhere. Here is the full comparison, with published salary data and our real prices.

AI calling vs telecaller: what's the real difference?

A telecaller is a person who can think, persuade and build trust, but works fixed hours, one call at a time, in the languages they speak. An AI agent calls within minutes of a lead arriving, at any hour you allow, in several languages, and logs every outcome, but follows a script and approved facts rather than judgement.

What does a telecaller really cost in India?

Telecaller cost in India starts with salary but does not end there. Published data puts pay at roughly ₹1 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh a year, with city averages for telemarketers between about ₹17,000 and ₹27,000 a month. On top come employer contributions, seat, phone, software, supervision, hiring and training.

What the salary data says

  • AmbitionBox lists telecaller salaries in India at ₹1 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh a year, based on 19.4k reported salaries (updated 27 July 2025). That works out to roughly ₹8,300 to ₹29,200 a month.
  • Indeed lists an average telemarketer salary in India of ₹16,702 a month from 2.3k reported salaries (updated 28 May 2026). Its top-paying cities: Mumbai ₹26,664, Gurugram ₹19,622, Thane ₹19,129, Noida ₹17,777 and New Delhi ₹17,648.
  • Minimum wages set a floor that varies by state and skill category. For example, Delhi's schedule, as listed on WageIndicator, shows ₹22,411 a month for a clerical worker who is a matriculate but not a graduate. Check your own state's current notification.

The costs that don't show up on the payslip

  • Employer contributions. ESIC sets the employer's ESI contribution at 3.25% of wages for covered employees. Provident fund adds more where it applies.
  • Seat and tools. Desk space, a phone or headset, a calling plan or SIM, and CRM or dialler licences.
  • Supervision. A team lead's time listening to calls and checking the CRM.
  • Hiring and training. Every time someone leaves, you pay again in recruitment time and weeks of lower output while the new person learns your projects.
  • Idle and ringing time. You pay for the hours spent dialling numbers that don't answer, waiting, and updating sheets.

Is AI calling cheaper than a telecaller per minute?

Not always. On our plans AI talk time costs ₹6–8 per minute plus 18% GST, in 30-second pulses, with unanswered calls not billed. A well-used telecaller spending several hours a day in actual conversation can come out lower per talk minute. The gap closes or reverses once you count idle time, after-hours cover and speed.

A worked example (illustrative numbers)

Say a real-estate firm in Gurugram hires one telecaller at ₹19,622 a month, Indeed's Gurugram average. Add ESI at 3.25% (about ₹638) and the direct cost is roughly ₹20,260 before seat, tools and supervision. Now assume this person manages 2.5 hours of real talk time a day over 26 working days: about 3,900 talk minutes a month. That is roughly ₹5.20 per talk minute, before overheads.

The same 3,900 minutes on our Starter plan, at ₹8 per minute, is ₹31,200 plus GST. On Scale, at ₹6.50 per minute, it would be ₹25,350 plus GST, though Scale's monthly minimum is 10,000 minutes. Setup fees, from ₹25,000 on Starter, are one-time. Our full plan details are on the pricing page.

So on raw talk minutes, this AI calling vs telecaller example favours the person. Change the assumptions, though, and the picture moves:

  • If real talk time is 1.5 hours a day, not 2.5, the telecaller's cost per talk minute rises to about ₹8.66.
  • If leads arrive at night and on Sundays, the telecaller is not there; the AI agent can call them within your allowed hours or answer inbound calls after hours.
  • If 200 leads land on a Monday morning after weekend ads, one person works through them over days; AI calls them that morning.

To run your own numbers, our AI calling ROI calculator walks through the inputs.

Where does AI calling clearly win?

AI wins where speed, volume and consistency matter more than persuasion: the first call to a new lead, reminders and confirmations, event invitations, after-hours answering, and calls in several languages. It also wins on records, because every call gets a recording, transcript, summary and sheet update.

Speed to first call

On our platform, connected Google Sheets are checked every 2 minutes, and leads also arrive from Facebook and Instagram lead ads, CRM webhooks and CSV uploads. A lead who filled a form ten minutes ago will usually remember it better than one called the next afternoon.

Coverage and languages

Koravi Developers, a plotted-development company in North Karnataka, uses AI agents to call enquiries in Kannada, Hindi and English and book site visits. They also run an after-hours front-desk line that takes the caller's name, interest and preferred call-back time, and promises a call from the project team. Finding one telecaller fluent in all three languages who also works evenings is hard; the agents cover it by design.

Consistency

Each project has its own agent with its own locked facts, so the agent quotes the same price and location every time. We introduced this after an early setup where one agent mixed up prices and locations between projects, a reminder that consistency comes from setup, not magic.

Where do humans still win?

People win wherever the call needs judgement, trust or negotiation: closing a high-value sale, handling an angry customer, working through a complicated objection, or a sensitive conversation about health or money. They also read tone and context in ways a scripted agent cannot.

  • Closing. A family deciding on a plot wants to talk to someone who can answer follow-ups and make a judgement call.
  • Complaints. An upset customer needs a person who can take responsibility.
  • Unusual questions. Anything outside the approved facts should go to your team, and a good agent offers a call-back rather than guessing.
  • Relationships. Your best customers and channel partners deserve a known voice.

This is why the AI vs human calling debate is usually the wrong frame. The useful question is which calls go where.

How do you split work between AI and telecallers?

Give AI the first call to every new lead, reminders, confirmations, invitations and after-hours answering. Give your telecallers the leads the AI has qualified or booked, the objections it hands over, and every negotiation. Then review recordings weekly to move the line as you learn.

  1. List every call type your team makes in a normal week, with rough volumes.
  2. Mark each one as repeatable or judgement-heavy. Booking a visit is repeatable; negotiating a plot price is not.
  3. Move the repeatable first-touch calls to AI, one use case at a time, starting with new-lead calls.
  4. Define the hand-off. Which outcomes go to a telecaller, in which sheet column, and how fast they must call back.
  5. Let your sales manager monitor the first week using live listening and take-over, and fix scripts from what they hear.
  6. Re-plan telecaller time around hot leads and closing, not raw dialling.

Pro tip

Before deciding, measure one number for a week: real talk minutes per telecaller per day, not dials. Most managers have never seen it. It tells you exactly what your human cost per conversation is, and makes any comparison with per-minute AI pricing honest.

Common mistakes when you replace telecallers with AI

The biggest mistake is swapping out the whole team at once instead of moving the right calls. Others include comparing salary with per-minute price without counting talk time, launching without testing by your sales manager, and leaving no one responsible for the visits and demos the AI books.

  • Cutting the whole team at once. You lose the people who close.
  • Comparing the wrong numbers. Salary versus per-minute price means nothing until you know real talk minutes.
  • No hand-off rule. Booked visits sit in a sheet and nobody calls to confirm.
  • Scripts written as speeches. Long monologues feel rushed; keep turns to one or two sentences.
  • Forgetting manners. Calling a woman "Sir" repeatedly loses the call. Use names with "ji" or "avare".
  • Ignoring the rules. Commercial calls fall under TRAI's regulations whether a person or software makes them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a telecaller cost in India?

Published salary data varies widely. AmbitionBox lists telecaller pay at ₹1 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh a year (updated July 2025), and Indeed lists an average telemarketer salary of ₹16,702 a month (updated May 2026), with Gurugram at ₹19,622. Add employer contributions such as ESI at 3.25% of wages where it applies, plus seat, phone, software, supervision and training.

Is AI calling cheaper than a telecaller?

Not always per minute of talk time. A telecaller who is well used for several hours of talk a day can cost less per talk minute than AI at ₹6–8 plus GST. AI tends to win on speed to first call, after-hours cover, bursts of leads, language range and complete logging, and because unanswered calls are not billed.

Can I replace all my telecallers with AI?

We would not recommend it. AI is strong at the first call within minutes, reminders, confirmations, invitations and after-hours answering. People are better at negotiation, complex objections, complaints and high-value closing. Most teams get the best result by moving repetitive first-touch calls to AI and giving telecallers the qualified and booked leads.

How fast can an AI agent call a new lead?

On our platform, a new lead in a connected Google Sheet is picked up within about two minutes, because connected sheets are checked every 2 minutes. Leads from Facebook and Instagram lead ads, CRM webhooks and CSV uploads also flow in. Calls still respect the calling-hour window and DND checks you set.

What happens to my telecallers if we start AI calling?

In a hybrid setup their work changes rather than disappears. Instead of dialling every raw lead, they call back people the AI has qualified or booked, handle objections the agent hands over, and confirm high-value visits or demos. Many managers also use the AI call summaries to brief their team before each call.
