Part of our guide: AI Calling Cost in India: Pricing Models, Real Numbers and ROI

Key takeaways

  • The main models are per-minute, per-call, subscription or minimum commitment, per-outcome, and "bring your own components" pass-through.
  • Your real cost depends on three things: how many calls get answered, how long they last, and how the provider rounds time (pulse billing).
  • Per-minute pricing usually favours businesses with many short or unanswered calls; per-call pricing favours short, predictable calls.
  • Always compare quotes on one sample month of your own call mix, before and after 18% GST.

AI calling pricing in India comes in four or five shapes, and the headline rate rarely tells you what you will actually pay. Two quotes that look identical can differ by a wide margin once you factor in unanswered calls, pulse rounding, minimum commitments and setup fees. We run AI voice agents for Indian businesses every day and bill per minute, so here is how each model works, where each one fits, and how to compare quotes on your own numbers.

What are the main AI calling pricing models in India?

There are five common ways AI calling providers charge: per minute of talk time, per call (attempted or connected), a fixed subscription or monthly minimum, per outcome such as a booked appointment, and component pass-through where speech, AI model and telephony are billed separately. Most real plans mix two of these, usually a setup fee plus usage.

Here is how they compare at a glance:

Model What you pay for Works well when Watch out for
Per-minute Connected talk time, rounded to a pulse Call lengths vary; many calls are short or unanswered Pulse size, minimum billable time, monthly minimums
Per-call Each call (attempted or connected) at a flat rate Calls are short and uniform, such as confirmations Whether unanswered dials count; caps on call length
Subscription / minimum commitment A fixed monthly amount, often with included minutes Volume is steady month to month Unused minutes, overage rates, lock-in period
Per-outcome Each booked appointment, qualified lead or sale Outcome definitions are crystal clear Disputes over what counts; higher unit price
Component pass-through Platform fee plus speech-to-text, AI model, voice and carrier costs You have engineers who will build and tune it Many line items; cost varies by model choice

How does per-minute AI calling pricing work?

With ai calling per minute pricing, you pay a rate for every minute your agent is connected to a person, with time rounded up to a fixed block called a pulse. The rate usually bundles the AI model, voice, speech recognition and telephony. Unanswered calls may or may not be billed, so confirm that before signing.

It is also the fairest model when call lengths vary: a two-minute sales conversation costs more than a 25-second "your appointment is confirmed" call, which matches what each call actually uses.

International platforms publish per-minute rates too, in US dollars. As of October 2026, Bland AI's pricing page lists a flat per-minute rate that it says covers the AI model, speech-to-text and text-to-speech, while Vapi's pricing page lists a per-minute hosting fee with the speech, AI model, voice and carrier costs itemised separately. The bundled rate is easier to budget; the itemised one gives a technical team more control. Rates change, so check the live pages.

What is pulse billing, and why does it matter?

Pulse billing means each call is rounded up to a fixed block of time. With 30-second pulses, a 40-second call is billed as two pulses (60 seconds). With 60-second pulses, a 70-second call is billed as two full minutes. The smaller the pulse, the closer your bill gets to actual talk time.

The arithmetic below shows how the same calls are billed under three rounding rules:

Actual call length Per-second billing 30-second pulses 60-second pulses
20 seconds 20 s 30 s 60 s
40 seconds 40 s 60 s 60 s
70 seconds 70 s 90 s 120 s
2 min 10 s (130 s) 130 s 150 s 180 s

Across thousands of short calls the rounding adds up. A list of 2,000 calls of 20 seconds each is 40,000 seconds of real talk time; on 60-second pulses you are billed for 1,20,000 seconds, three times as much. That is why pulse size belongs in every quote comparison, especially for reminder, confirmation and qualification campaigns where many calls end quickly.

Per-minute billing rounds up in pulses; the last carriage of a long call is often only half full.

When does per-call pricing make sense?

Per call pricing ai plans charge a flat amount for each call, regardless of length within a limit. They are easy to understand and work well for short, predictable calls such as order confirmations or reminders. They get expensive when many dials go unanswered and are still counted, or when conversations run long.

The key question is what "a call" means in the contract: every dial attempt, or only connected calls? Ask also about maximum call length, whether retries count as new calls, and whether a busy tone counts.

A worked example: per-minute vs per-call

Say a coaching institute in Pune makes 5,000 call attempts in a month to admission enquiries. This is a hypothetical example, and the per-call rate is an illustrative figure, not any vendor's quote.

  • 2,000 attempts go unanswered.
  • 2,000 are answered but short: the person says it's a bad time and asks for a call-back. Each lasts under 30 seconds.
  • 1,000 become full conversations of about two minutes.

On per-minute pricing with 30-second pulses and unanswered calls not billed, the institute pays for 2,000 × 0.5 minutes plus 1,000 × 2 minutes, which is 3,000 minutes. At ₹8 a minute that is ₹24,000 before GST.

Under a hypothetical per-call plan at ₹10 per attempt, the same month costs ₹50,000. If that plan counted only connected calls, it would be 3,000 × ₹10 = ₹30,000. The rate on the brochure was the same; the definition of "call" changed the bill by ₹20,000.

Per-call is not a bad deal in itself: if nearly every call is answered and lasts about a minute, it can be simpler and cheaper. Run your own numbers. Our AI calling ROI calculator guide walks through building that sample month.

Is a subscription or monthly minimum better than pure pay-as-you-go?

A subscription or monthly minimum gives you a predictable bill and usually a lower per-minute rate in exchange for committing to volume. Pure pay-as-you-go suits testing and irregular campaigns. If your call volume is steady, for example daily follow-up of fresh leads, a commitment is usually better value.

The trade-off is risk: commit to 5,000 minutes and use 3,000, and you have paid for minutes you did not need. Size the tier on your quiet month, not your best one.

Settle in writing: what happens to unused minutes, the rate above the included minutes, the commitment period and exit process, and whether extra agents, numbers and integrations cost extra.

What does DigitalCallers charge, and why per-minute?

DigitalCallers charges a one-time setup fee plus a per-minute rate with a monthly minimum, billed in 30-second pulses. Unanswered calls are not billed. A two-minute sales conversation costs roughly ₹12–16 and a short confirmation call under a minute costs ₹3–8. All prices are plus 18% GST.

We chose per-minute billing with small pulses because our customers' calls vary a lot. A real-estate site-visit call in Kannada might run two minutes; a reminder call might run 20 seconds. Billing in 30-second pulses keeps short calls cheap, and not billing unanswered calls means you are not paying for numbers that rang out. Here are our published plans:

Plan Setup (one-time) Monthly minimum Agents included Integrations Support
Starter ₹25,000 3,000 min at ₹8/min (₹24,000) 1 (extra ₹25,000 each) None included Reply within 1 working day
Growth ₹50,000 5,000 min at ₹7/min (₹35,000) 2 (extra ₹25,000 each) 1 Reply within 8 working hours
Scale ₹1,00,000 10,000 min at ₹6.50/min (₹65,000) 4 (extra ₹20,000 each) 2 Reply within 4 working hours + monthly review
Enterprise ₹2,00,000 15,000 min at ₹6.50/min (₹97,500) 6 (extra ₹20,000 each) Up to 5 Named 1-to-1 manager; critical issues within 1 hour

Phone numbers are ₹2,000 per number per month on every plan. On Starter, for instance, the first month works out to ₹25,000 setup plus ₹24,000 minimum usage plus ₹2,000 for one number, which is ₹51,000 before GST and ₹60,180 with 18% GST. Later months are the usage and number charges only. The setup fee pays for building the agent on your scripts and facts, connecting your leads, and testing with you before go-live, because ours is a done-for-you service rather than a self-serve tool. Pro tip

Ask every provider for one month of sample billing on your own call mix, with each call's duration, pulses billed and amount. A provider confident in its pricing will happily show the line items.

How to compare AI calling quotes in six steps

The fairest way to compare quotes is to price the same sample month under each provider's rules. Pull your real lead volume, estimate answer rates and call lengths, apply each provider's rounding and definitions, then add setup, numbers, integrations and GST. The lowest headline rate often loses this test.

  1. Pull your volume. Count last month's leads and the attempts each needs.
  2. Estimate answers and lengths. Split calls into unanswered, short (under 30 seconds) and full conversations. If you have no data, our AI calling statistics from 47,000+ calls give one reference point, with caveats.
  3. Apply each provider's billing rules. Use their pulse size, their definition of a billable call and their minimum billable duration.
  4. Add fixed costs. Setup, extra agents, phone numbers, integrations and any platform fee.
  5. Add GST consistently. Compare all figures either before or after 18% GST, never a mix.
  6. Price month-three extras. A second agent, a CRM integration or WhatsApp follow-up often appears after launch.

Common mistakes when comparing AI calling pricing

The most common mistake is comparing per-minute rates without checking pulse size and what counts as billable. Others include ignoring setup and number costs, assuming unanswered calls are free, comparing pre-GST and post-GST figures, and choosing a commitment tier based on your busiest month.

  • Comparing rates, not bills. ₹6 a minute on 60-second pulses can cost more than ₹8 a minute on 30-second pulses if most calls are short.
  • Forgetting the setup work. A low rate with no setup often means you build and test the agent yourself, and that time costs money.
  • Ignoring call quality. An agent that delivers long monologues or repeats itself gets more hang-ups. In our testing, one or two sentences per turn and one number per turn work far better.
  • Overlooking regulatory costs. TRAI's September 2026 amendment to the commercial communication rules introduces a termination charge of up to 5 paise per minute on automated (A2P) calls, levied by the receiving operator on the originating one, with calls from the designated commercial number series exempt. How providers pass this on is not yet clear, so ask. Our explainer on TRAI's 2026 anti-spam rules covers what else changed.

Which AI calling pricing model should you choose?

Choose per-minute if your calls vary in length or many go unanswered; per-call if calls are short, uniform and nearly always answered; a commitment tier once volume is steady; and per-outcome only when "outcome" is defined beyond argument. Whichever you choose, price a real sample month first.

For sales teams like real-estate developers following up ad leads or a coaching institute calling admission enquiries, the call mix is uneven: plenty of short "call me later" responses and fewer full conversations. Per-minute billing with small pulses tends to suit that mix. For the full cost picture, including setup and how AI compares with a telecalling team, see our guide to AI calling cost in India.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI calling pricing model is cheapest?

None is cheapest in every case. Per-minute pricing usually wins when many calls are short or unanswered, because you pay for talk time only. Per-call pricing can suit very predictable, short calls. Subscriptions suit steady volume. Model your own mix of answered and unanswered calls and average call length before deciding.

What is pulse billing in AI calling?

Pulse billing rounds each call up to a fixed block of time. With 30-second pulses, a 40-second call is billed as 60 seconds; with 60-second pulses it is also billed as 60 seconds, but a 70-second call becomes 120 seconds. Smaller pulses mean less rounding, which matters most when your calls are short.

How much does an AI sales call cost in India?

On our published DigitalCallers pricing, a sales conversation of about two minutes costs roughly ₹12–16 and a short confirmation call under a minute costs ₹3–8, plus 18% GST. Unanswered calls are not billed. Other providers price differently, so compare on the same call mix.

Do I pay for unanswered AI calls?

It depends on the provider, which is why you should ask in writing before signing. Some per-call plans count every dial attempt, including numbers that ring out or are switched off. On DigitalCallers, unanswered calls are not billed; you pay only for connected talk time, rounded up in 30-second pulses.

Is GST charged on AI calling services in India?

Our prices are quoted plus 18% GST, and most Indian B2B software and calling services quote GST separately. When comparing quotes, check whether each figure is before or after GST so you are not comparing a pre-tax rate with a post-tax one.
